He was supposed to start business studies in the fall, but his heart beat against him and the call of the waves from Bali only got stronger. So the plans changed and he started preparing his dream photography and surfing trip with his friend. He packed a surfboard, a camera, a drone and other filming equipment, as well as a small backpack of clothes. We hugged on the stairs - for the last time, because he never came home again. He passed away suddenly at the age of 22 in Bali.
At first, messages from the trip came occasionally. Everything seemed to be fine. During the last week of his life, the messages started to come more often and their tone became emotional and profound. He shared how much he loves his family and how happy he is now that he has realized important things in life. That's how he said goodbye to us without knowing why he did it. In the book, I, Mom, reflected on his messages and the last phone conversation we had just a few hours before he flew across the border.
The book reminds us of the mercilessness and unpredictability of life. Sometimes it's good to stop and think about the purpose of living here. You have to be ready to give up the most valuable things. How the heart endures and processes is always individual. There is no right or wrong, there are only different lives. This is my story about the pain of losing a child and recovering back to life.
