Morganite is a soft pink, sometimes purple or salmon type of beryl and is named after the American banker and collector John Piermont Morgan Sr. This rare variety of beryl was known by its own name only in 1911 as colored beryl from Russia. , named after the Russian mineralogist VJ Woroblev (Worobjevite). Morganite has been found in the United States in the Ramona and Pala regions of California. Morganite occurs with several varieties of tourmaline. Morganite is also found near Norway in Maine. Important sites are located in Brazil, especially in the state of Minas Gerais. Maharita stones are striking pink and of very good quality. Cut stones weighing 500 carats are also known. The small morganite figurine, measuring 11 cm x 6 cm, is from Anjanabonoina. The collection of the St. Petersburg museum includes a polished stone of up to 598.5 carats and a rough morganite from Madagascar weighing 5 kilograms. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC has 56-287 carats of faceted morganites, and the Royal Museum in Toronto has 118.6 carats of morganite, all from Madagascar or Brazil. Other locations of morganite include Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, China, Russia (Ural), Italy (Elba) and Kazakhstan. A red beryl called byxbite comes from the Wah Wah Mountain area in the United States. The stones cut from this do not weigh more than 10 carats.
