Bjarmia, or the land of the Bjarmies, is a region appearing in Icelandic sagas and other medieval sources, which was located on the shores of the Arctic Ocean or the White Sea. The Bjarmes have traditionally been considered a Finno-Ugric people who became prosperous by trading along the big rivers. The invasions of the Vikings and later the Mongols eventually destroyed the land of the Bjarmi, but the story of this ancient people of Finnish descent lived on in the sagas.

The rise and fall of Bjarmi's rule was first published in 1965. The foreword to the new edition of the classic work was written by Juha Hurme, Finlandia winner of fiction.

Martti Haavio (1899-1973) was a researcher of folk poetry and mythology. He worked as a professor of folk poetry studies at the University of Helsinki. Along with his academic career, Haavio published poems under the author name P. Mustapää.
