This book is a story about the soothsayers of Lapland, "witches without a drum". Even though the drum fell silent in Lapland centuries ago, and the time of noaids falling into the groove was over, their followers who practiced magic were still called by the name of witches for a long time. However, one thing or another of the old Samanism was inherited by these new semi-professionals of the afterlife.

The knowledge of Lapland, regardless of the language, differed from that further south, especially in the versatile exploitation of the souls of the deceased. The knower of the south carried out his practice by making use of magical power, people that he recruited in addition to the dead from various other sources. Pohjoisen's colleague, on the other hand, relied on the personal dead creatures he raised from the kalms and the faceless kalm people. This root is the legacy of Samanism in the northern scholarly culture.

The Wise Men of Lapland is not only a non-fiction book about the special features of the practice of northern magic, but also a deep dive into the northern story tradition, where the dead are raised, "corpse mulch is drunk" and spirits of the deceased are recruited as reindeer herders.
