Every day, there are many millions of lightnings on the earth, each of which carries incredible energy, producing temperatures of up to 20,000 degrees Celsius. However, only a few of these flashes reach the earth, and only a fraction of them strike in sand. If, however, this rare combination occurs, the lightning energies melt and form the quartz of the sand in seconds into natural silica glass (amorphous SiO2), so-called fulgurites. The name Fulgurit derives from the Latin "fulgur" for lightning. The often tube-shaped appearance brought this isolated, several-meter-long wonders of nature also the name flashtube.
