A basic scribe's essential, a good quill pen. Did you know that the quill pen was pretty much the only writing instrument for almost a thousand years, from around the 9th century until the 17th century?
Originally, the quill pen did not have a separate nib, but ink was taken from the tip of the quill. With one dip, you could write a word or two, maybe even a few if you did it well. Then the nib had to be dipped into the inkwell again. This gives you an idea of the slow and patient work that monks did when copying texts, which have fortunately and for our benefit survived to our times.
