Ancient castles and castle hills — Historical excursion destinations - Harri Ahonen
Finland's ancient Bronze and Iron Age castles are the most fascinating traces of prehistoric times still visible in the terrain.
The chain of castles, or ancient castles, stretches like a shield from western Uusimaa to the Kokemäenjoki River. They also rise on the rugged shores of Vanajavesistö and Lake Päijänne and Lake Saimaa. Castles were needed to guard and defend the coasts, especially during the restless Viking Age of the Late Iron Age, when raiding expeditions often threatened the coasts.
Historian, hiking journalist and nature photographer Harri Ahonen's guide takes the reader back a thousand years and introduces over 80 ancient castles in the regions of Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, Häme, Kymi, Pirkanmaa, Satakunta, South Savo and South Karelia. Equipped with maps and photographs taken by Ahonen, the book offers good tips for exploring these fascinating ancient sites and navigating the surrounding terrain.
