Agate is a transparent but sometimes opaque variant of quartz and a subspecies of chalcedony. The chemical structure of agate is identical to jasper, flint, hornblende and it is often found with opal as well. Colorful striped specimens are used as semi-precious stones. The name agate comes from the Greek Ἀχάτης, Achatès, the current name of the Dirillo River in southern Sicily, where agates and other chalcedony were found. Traditionally, agate has been used as a lucky or healing stone. Consumables such as buttons have also been made from agate.

Agate is associated with the zodiac signs Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio and Gemini.

Agate compounds are formed from a solution of silicon in the cavities of old rocks. Stones can be artificially colored to produce color combinations that are more vibrant than those found in nature. Important sources of agate are Brazil, Uruguay and the United States (Oregon, Washington and the Upper Lake area). Closer to the Netherlands and Belgium, agate can also be found in Hunsrück in Germany.
