Woman. Healer. Witch.

The year is 1635. Valpuri Kinni, a woman suspected of being a witch, is thrown into Turku's Aurajoki. The water test is used to make sure whether the accused is really a witch. Valpuri has traveled a long way from Kurinmaa all the way to Liitsola in Ala-Satakunta, but there doesn't seem to be a corner in the world where he can live in peace without accusations of witchcraft.

Valpuri can read spells and cure people's and cattle's ailments with herbs, but churchmen, townspeople and rural people see her only as a sinful woman who has been tricked by the devil into unnatural acts.

The red witch is based on the story of Valpuri Kinn, who lived in the 17th century. The pages of the book paint a picture of a stubborn and outspoken woman who does not adapt to her role.

Jenna Kostet is a writer from Raisio. He is an ethnologist by training. Kostet has previously published five novels, a book about the Catherines of Turku Castle and a knitting book.

"No, Valpuri thought. The thought was clear and it made him deaf as if his heart had been replaced by a spark struck with a soldering iron that burst into flame when it met a dry kindling. He couldn't give in, couldn't give in, couldn't throw himself at the mercy of men once more. Valpuri wasn't going to be again to be questioned by the courts and not to be punished with a whip, a gallows rope or a hangman's axe."
