The first scientific description of rhodonite was made in 1819 by the German naturalist Christoph Friedrich Jasche. The pink color inspired Jasche to name the stone "rhodonite", which derives from the Greek word "rhodon" meaning rose or the scent of a rose. Therefore, occasional spellings such as Rhodonith, Rodonite or Rodonith are incorrect.
