"Our ancient poetry conveys to us information about the Kalevala culture, the Finnish heroic age, about which history is silent."

The classic work The World of Finnish Ancient Poetry was first published in 1935. Martti Haavio, a great name in folk poetry and mythology studies, introduces the reader to the different genres of our ancient poetry, from heroic songs to proverbs and from birth spells to laments. Haavio opens before our eyes the society depicted in ancient poems: everyday life, livelihoods, social classes and professions, war myths and history. This culturally significant work is now appearing again as part of SKS's folklore classics series. Veikko Anttonen, professor emeritus of religious studies, has written new afterwords to the work for the pleasure and help of the modern reader.

Martti Haavio (1899-1973) was a researcher of folk poetry and mythology. Along with his academic career, Haavio published poems under the author name P. Mustapää.
