Thoth Tarot OTO White box C 1978/1983 (OOP RARE) (preloved used)
White Box "C" Thoth deck in good condition.
The "White Box C" version of the Thoth Tarot deck, published in 1978 and 1983, is also highly significant among collectors and Tarot enthusiasts. The next edition after "White Box B", "White Box C" offers its own unique features and differences that set it apart from both its predecessor and later editions.
The "White Box C" version was part of the ongoing publication and circulation of the Thoth Tarot deck, retaining the original designs by Aleister Crowley and the artistic execution by Lady Frieda Harris. Special features of this version include:
- Print quality and colors: Many collectors and enthusiasts will notice that the colors and imprint of the "White Box C" edition may differ from previous versions. The saturation of colors and the details of the printing technique can bring out different perspectives on the symbolism of the cards.
- Packaging: As the name suggests, this version came in a white box that contained the cards and possibly an instruction booklet explaining the meanings and use of the cards according to Crowley and Harris' views.
-Availability and Collectability: While "White Box C" may not be as rare as some of the earlier editions, its distinctive features make it a sought after collector. In particular, pieces in good condition with little signs of wear can be valuable.
Although "White Box C" did not contain significant changes to the design or art of the cards themselves compared to previous editions, collectors and Tarot scholars appreciate this version for the context of its era and the continuity it provides in preserving the original vision of Crowley and Harris.
As with all collectibles, the rarity, condition and originality of an edition are important factors in determining its value. The "White Box C" version offers its own unique part in the history of the Thoth Tarot deck, which continues to be the subject of interest and research for both esoteric and collectible value.
Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot Deck - "White Box C"
New York: Samuel Weiser, (1978). First or Early Printing of Second Full Color Printing. Set of cards with booklet in original folding cardboard box. The cards measure 5 1/2" x 3 3/4"; the box a fraction of an inch larger. Complete set comprising the 78 Tarot cards, plus an additional "Caliph Card" with a short history of the deck, and an extra card with Crowley's unicursal hexagram on the recto. Also a 48 page stapled booklet (the "LWB" - "Little White Booklet") titled "Instructions for Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot Deck' by James Wasserman, with two Essays by Frieda Harris with commentary and Footnotes by Stuart R. Kaplan. A first or early Weiser printing of the deck sometimes known as "White Box C". Following the success of the original Llewellyn and Weiser printings of the Thoth deck ("White Box A", Llewlyn; "White Box B" Llewellyn and Weiser) arrangements were made to rephotograph the original Tarot designs in London, to produce a more accurate deck. It was co-published by US Games Systems Inc. and Weiser in 1978. The deck was very popular, with at least three printings done in the "White Box C" form, but with subtle differences between them. As far as we can establish this is an early printing of the Samuel Weiser version of "White Box C" - with Weiser identified on the box as the Publisher and the distributor, but with no ISBN printed on the box. The printing number sequence of the "LWB" is complete in series from 10 -1, indicating it is a first printing, and the Caliph Card has neither address nor copyright information on it. (Thanks to R. Leo Gillis for his help with the information on which this listing is based.) The deck itself is unused and thus Fine, the booklet has some minor creasing to the front wrapper, and the box is lightly rubbed particularly at Corners . Uncommon to find an unused early printing.
