Stromatolites are fossilized layers of algae within ancient sedimentary rock. These ancient single-celled organisms are believed to be some of the first forms of life on our planet. The remains of some cyanobacteria (algae) in rocks date back more than 3.5 billion years. Stromatolites can come in many colors and can contain a lot of impurities in the bedrock (which is usually limestone). The most common colors we have encountered are brown, beige, maroon, yellow, white and gray. Stromatolites can be found all over the world and are abundant in Morocco, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea countries.
