Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903), an American folklorist and poet, dedicated the last 15 years of his life to preserving the Italian witch tradition for future generations. Aradia is his best-known work. It has had a profound influence on the rise of neo-paganism in the West.

Maddalena, Leland's guide to the world of Italian witchcraft, was a Florentine card reader and witch in whose family the ancient tradition had been kept alive for many generations. In 1897, Maddalena brought Leland a text that contained the essence of Italian witchcraft. Maddalena's original text has long been lost. Only this work compiled by Leland remains.

Aradia contains spells and stories received from Maddalena, as well as texts selected by Leland. At its core is the story of Aradia, the daughter of the goddess Diana. Diana sends Aradia to Earth to teach the oppressed the art of witchcraft, which would free them from all kinds of suffering and injustice.

Although the background of this work is unclear, it has undoubtedly played a key role in the emergence of the modern Wicca tradition. As such, it belongs on the reading list of anyone interested in witchcraft.
