Each of us believes in conspiracies - our brains are not interested in the truth, only in survival.

The current work of a brain researcher reveals that conspiracy beliefs are not a malfunction of the brain, but the functioning of brain mechanisms that promote survival. Conspiracy beliefs are often explained away as bias or laziness in thinking, but research shows that we are all susceptible to conspiracy theories. The same brain mechanisms that help us make quick decisions, get creative in social situations, and keep our moods high predispose us to conspiracy theories. Evolution has created a conspiracy brain in each of us.

Perceptual psychology expert Jukka Häkkinen studies human perception, thinking and decision-making at the University of Helsinki. He is also familiar with the brain mechanisms of hallucinations and other unusual experiences.
