Along with the Kalevala, Kanteletar is a cornerstone of Finnish cultural heritage. While the Kalevala tells mythical stories, Kanteletar conveys emotions. These folk poems feature a woman's voice. Kanteletar's lyrical songs and poems provide a touch of everyday life and celebration from centuries ago: joy, sadness, fear, loneliness and love. The collection of over 650 poems leads the reader deep into an archaic world of experience.
The Finnish Literature Society first published most of the songs and poems in this work in 1840. Kantelettare's poems became a national treasure, published in various editions. Now these classic texts have been revised and corrected by comparing them with the original edition. Explanations of difficult words are included, as well as previously unpublished poems edited by Lönnrot for the new edition of Kantelettare.
Docent Niina Hämäläinen has written an explanatory section for the book, which opens up the meanings and backgrounds of the poems for modern readers.
