Olibaanum is a mixture of aromatic organic substances, which when lit produces a pleasant smell. Olibaanumi also refers to the resin of the frankincense (Boswellia) tree. The word olibanum comes from the word 'we smoke' (we smoke to sanctify). Incense has been used since at least 1700 BC, probably originally as incense offerings to appease the gods. The purpose of incense was to dispel the smell of decay. When the Jews sacrificed animals, their blood and remains were covered with a strong smell of frankincense. Incense is mainly used in European churches. Although among the Jews there was a need to dispel the smell of sacrifices, incense could also cover the smell of the wealthy buried in the church. The expression 'rich skunk' may originate from this. Even at funerals and places of pilgrimage, where people have come from far away, the use of incense to cover the smell does not seem to be a coincidence. Resins and oils were not accessible to ordinary people, as they had to be imported from outside Europe. In Western countries, the culture of using incense outside the church was missing until the 1960s when interest in Eastern cultures and religions grew. In many countries, such as China, India, Tibet and Japan, incense is widely used. In these countries, the use of incense is as common as keeping flowers in the home or using soap and perfume in Western countries. The import and use of oriental incense increased with interest.
