As a young prince, Prince Siddhartha Gautama (557–477 BC) became shocked by the suffering, illness and death inherent in human life. He left his privileged life, focusing all his energies on solving the riddle of life.

After years of study and meditation, he realized the truth and became enlightened – he became the Buddha. The great wheel of being, the evolution of spirit or consciousness through many forms, was revealed to him. According to the Buddha's teachings, the peace of the spirit, Nirvana, was attainable only by renouncing selfishness, the mortal self. The Buddha concentrated his insight into a phrase: renounce sin, strive for good, and purify one's heart. The Dhammapada describes the Buddhist path of self-education. In the sentences of the book, the student can see his soul as if in a mirror and deduce from which path he himself is walking.
