Cats were sacred in ancient Egypt. They represented Bastet, a cat-headed goddess who hailed from Bubastis, a city in northeastern Lower Egypt on the Nile Delta. Originally associated with the sun god Re, Bastet became known as a symbol of the sun's life-sustaining power, protection of women, happiness and joy. The cult of Bastet was particularly powerful in Bubastis, and her veneration spread throughout ancient Egypt. The role of the cat in ancient Egypt was both mundane and divine, which is reflected in many arts and religious objects of the period.
