Blavatsky starts from the fact that there are two souls and I.
The first self is dependent on the body, which means that its events are determined by the events preceding the body. It is called the lower self or psychic activity. It manifests itself through our organic system.
The other self, referred to as the higher self or noetic activity, is self-aware, active, and free-willed. It is not a mere series of psychological events, like the first mentioned self, but is a unity, or rather a unifying principle.
