Thousands of years ago in the region of East Asia , bells that rang loudly evolved into temple bells resembling church bells and later the sound bowls known today. The use of sound bowls to promote well-being has become more common in the Western world after hippies traveling in the East brought them with them, but using them is still a new thing compared to the Eastern world.

Nowadays, sound bowls are used e.g. in meditation, relaxation, overcoming sleep difficulties and counseling and therapy work. In sound bowl treatments, sound vibrations can be conducted with bowls placed on the body or from outside the body as sound waves. Sound bowl therapy is a comprehensive treatment, where the vibration of the sound bowls treats the person as a whole - mind, body and the spiritual part of the person.

Today's Tibetan sound bowls are typically alloys of seven or twelve metals, most of which are copper. The vibration level of sound bowls is affected by their size, shape, thickness, composition of the metal alloy and age. The bowls do not strictly correspond to the Western tonal system, although for therapeutic purposes a set is often collected, the pitches of which correspond to the notes CDEFGAH. In large-sized, high-quality sound bowls, two clearly distinguishable sound levels usually play, a lower base tone and a higher tone. In addition to these, there are rich sets of upper notes based on the base note, up to four octaves from the base note.
