In Chinese astrology, like Western astrology, there are twelve zodiac signs. Depending on your year of birth, you can be a Rat, Buffalo, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog or Pig. Half of these animal signs belong to the feminine (jin) group and half to the masculine (jang) group. One of the five elements gives its own addition to the character of the signs: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So you can be, for example, an Earth-Tiger, a Water-Hare or a Fire-Horse. Only every sixty years is a person born representing the same animal sign and the same element. Adding color to the character interpretation is the Rising sign, which is determined by what time of day you were born.
