The Kalevala is the central symbolic source of Finnish culture and a gift to world literature. Elias Lönnrot compiled it from ancient Finnish poems and created it as an epic in the 1830s and 1840s. The final version appeared in 1849.

The stories of the Kalevala were originally an oral tradition passed on by poets.
