Alchemy was one of the earliest experimental disciplines, with the help of which efforts were made to produce both gold and life-prolonging elixirs. In addition to the search for the Philosopher's Stone, alchemists tried to create living beings, distill various medicines and unravel the mysteries of matter. Spiritual and mystical alchemy was also an effort towards enlightenment and higher knowledge.

During its heyday in the 12th to 17th centuries, alchemy was taken very seriously in Europe, and numerous rulers employed a host of alchemists in their court laboratories. Perhaps not much gold was born in the secret chambers of the alchemists, but even more practical chemical inventions and discoveries from distillation vessels to phosphorus.

Sara Norja's work takes the reader on a fascinating journey into the history of Western alchemy, from Alexandria in Egypt to Emperor Rudolf II's Prague, Isaac Newton's laboratory and August Strindberg's studio.
