The 'true' cinnamon tree is a small, evergreen tree that can grow up to 10 meters tall, but is often considered a shrub in cultivation. Originally from Asia, cinnamon is now cultivated mainly in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Malaysia and the Seychelles. The cinnamon trade began with the Dutch occupation of Ceylon around 1518. Originally used by the Greeks and Romans as an aphrodisiac gum, cinnamon was gradually used as a cleanser. Cinnamon, like many spices, arrived in France after the return of the Crusaders.
In cooking, its refined, both spicy and sweet taste is used in many kitchen recipes. Very strong on the scent level, its aphrodisiac gum scent makes you smile."
