About Capiz shells:
Capiz shells are actually the outer shells of a marine animal; its scientific name is placuna placenta, and it is more commonly known as the "window oyster." Capiz shells from the Philippines are named after the town of Capiz because they were originally collected from the shallow coastal waters of the island, Panay. After cleaning, the shells are naturally translucent, and when painted, they allow for a stunning interplay of light and color.
