Tingsha cymbals
Tingshat (ding-shat, cymbals) are traditional hand cymbals used in spiritual rituals and meditation as musical offerings. In Buddhist puja prayer rituals, tingshat are played together with other instruments such as bells, drums, and horns. Today, they are used by Buddhists, Hindus, and others involved in wellness and energy work. Tingshat are also popular in Feng Shui, meditation, space cleansing, healing, and energy balancing.
How are tingshas used?
When tingsha cymbals are struck together, their beautiful, clear, and high sound cleanses the space and brings a peaceful silence to it. The vibration of the sound creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that helps with concentration and brings awareness back to the present moment. The cymbals can also be used to mark the beginning and end of a meditation practice.
Tingshat and Feng Shui
Tingshas can be played in the four corners of a room to cleanse and open the energy. They are a good alternative for clearing the space when burning incense is not possible or appropriate.
Tingsha and healing sound
The vibration of the tingsha helps to balance and clear the energy field. Their sound calls consciousness to presence and reminds of the important things in life.
Storage
Tingsha are recommended to be stored wrapped in cloth or in a special two-part brocade pouch to keep them protected and in good condition.
Indications
The upper surface of the tingsha can feature decorative motifs, such as dragons, the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra, or Buddhist symbols like the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibet. However, some tingshas are completely undecorated, allowing their beauty to be revealed purely through their sound.
Material
Tingshas are made using sand casting techniques from either brass (an alloy of copper and zinc) or bronze (an alloy of copper and tin). Brass cymbals produce a beautiful sound, but bronze cymbals resonate even more powerfully and their harmonic resonance is felt deeper in the energy field.
