Lectures on Finnish mythology - MA Castren
Matthias Alexander Castren's (1813-1852) Lectures on Finnish mythology is a key work in the history of the study of Finnish mythology. The work is now published for the first time translated into Finnish.
MA Castren is known as a linguist and explorer who worked with Siberian peoples, but he was particularly interested in Finnishness. Lectures on Finnish mythology are strongly based on Castren's own fieldwork experiences.
Castren's mythology lectures are an important part of the history of Finnish religious studies, linguistics and ethnology. The common sense and vividly written work opens an interesting perspective on the pioneer stages of mythological research, and it is suitable for use by both researchers and others interested in the subject.
The translator and editor of the work, FT Joonas Ahola, is an expert on the history of the ancient Scandinavian language and mythology.
