Spiritist session - Marjo Kaartinen
The end of the 19th century, the fin-de-siecle, was a frenzied time of alternative spirituality and the occult. Europe, including Finland, was thirsty for esoteric knowledge, mysteries and magic. The séances drew large crowds and were the talk of the town.
At the end of 1893, the famous Madame d'Esperance visited Helsinki, and the whole of Finland was abuzz with the mystical sessions of the famous medium. White spirits had wandered in the darkness of the halls, and many had seen the figure of their dead loved ones.
Who were these mysterious mediums and where did they come from? What happened in the spiritualist sessions, and what was the golden age of esotericism and occultism like in Finland?
Marjo Kaartinen is a professor of cultural history at the University of Turku.
